It's rich biodiversity in Indonesia. This is evidenced by the increasing number of discoveries of new species of animals in the archipelago. Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) in cooperation with The Nature Concervancy (TNC) discovered four new species of animals Kala Cemeti Sangkulirang caves in East Kalimantan and the Muller Mountains, Central Kalimantan.
The new findings are reported LIPI Cahyo Rahmadi zoology researcher, Australian researchers Dr. M.S. Harvey, and Dr. J. Kojima of Japan in the publication in the journal taxonomy Zootaxa2612 on September 15, 2010.
Kala whip is one group of animals that have a shape Arachnida creepy, like a monster that lives in darkness.
Four new species come from the tribe Kala Cemeti Charinidae, Amblypygi nation, class Arachnida.
The first type is Sarax yayukae, whose name is dedicated to Prof.. Dr. Yayuk R. Suhardjono of its importance during the expedition in Muller and Sangkulirang. Including, as a tribute to his contribution in the field of cave biology knowledge.
"Sarax yayukae found in caves in the Fall Topus, Joyless Raya, Central Kalimantan, TN Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya, Central Kalimantan, and Manukan Island across from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia," said Cahyo Rahmadi, in a release received VIVAnews, Thursday , 16 September 2010.
The second discovery is Sarax cavernicola, which is named after the place his life in the cave. "This species has the typical characteristics of the smaller cave with your eyes, pale brown color and elongated legs," said Cahyo.
Sarax cavernicola only found in two locations in Sangkulirang, namely Cave Ambulabung in Baai, East Kutai, and several caves in the area of Marang, Kelai, Berau District.
The third type is Sarax mardua, named for its discovery location in Cave Mardua in Pengadan, East Kutai. This species is also distinctive, having an elongated leg.
"This type is only found in one cave which is located in an isolated karst hills in the area Pengada," said Cahyo.
The fourth type, Sarax sangkulirangensis, was found in three different locations namely Tabalar, Pengadan, and Lake Tebo. This type is different from the previous type because it is relatively not yet adapted to the cave. Her eyes are relatively large and dark green color. "The name of the type taken by name karsnya formation," said Cahyo.
Four new species of the genus Sarax Cemeti Kala has a relatively small body size. Body length between 6-16 mm. The body is equipped claw with sharp thorns. The front pair of legs modified into antennae. The animal was walking with three pairs of legs, not like usual spiders that run with four pairs of legs.
In the world there are about 150 types of Kala whip consisting of 17 genera in five tribes. "Around 14 species are members of the clan Sarax found only in India, Southeast Asia, to Papua and the Solomon Islands," said Cahyo.
What is Kala whip?
As written Cahyo Rahmadi LIPI blogs, Kala Cemeti has the Latin name Amblypygi or in English known as whip-spiders or whip-tailess Scorpions.
It has a flat body with spiky claws, plus a front leg that extends like an antenna, and three pairs of legs to walk, give the impression as if Kala Cemeti is a dangerous poisonous animal.
However, all the impression it is not true. Kala whip is one group of animals that are not toxic. Sinister appearance does not reflect the real danger.
Cemeti Kala is one of the groups who are old enough Arachnida found in the fossil. Some parts of limbs and bits of hard skin is believed to have been found from the middle Devonian era, or about 385-392 million years ago.
Kala Cemeti had appeared in the Harry Potter movies, especially sequels Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
